Luck Pillars: Ten Years to a Column

8 min read

The four pillars describe the structure you are. Luck pillars and annual pillars describe when that structure meets the world. Together they make a complete chart.

A luck pillar turns every ten years, eight of them on a standard chart, covering eighty years. It is not a list of good and bad years. It is the process of waking up, one at a time, the elements that were asleep in the natal chart.

Starting from the month pillar

The first luck pillar is built from the month pillar. Running forward, take the stem-and-branch pair immediately after it. Running backward, take the one immediately before.

Month pillar Bing Wu, for example. Forward gives Ding Wei, Wu Shen, Ji You, Geng Xu, and so on. Backward gives Yi Si, Jia Chen, Gui Mao, Ren Yin.

Each pillar holds ten years. Eight pillars cover eighty years, roughly to the end of a life.

Forward or backward

Two rules, usually compressed into one line: yang-year men and yin-year women run forward; yin-year men and yang-year women run backward.

  • Born in a yang year (year stem Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng or Ren), male → forward
  • Born in a yang year, female → backward
  • Born in a yin year (year stem Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin or Gui), male → backward
  • Born in a yin year, female → forward

Working out the starting age

The starting age measures how far the birth moment sits from a solar term. The conversion is fixed:

  • Running forward: count the days from birth to the next jie (month-starting term)
  • Running backward: count the days from the previous jie to birth
  • Three days convert to one year; one day to four months; one two-hour period to ten days

A worked example

Someone running forward, born on 20 January, in a year when the Beginning of Spring falls on 4 February. That is fifteen days from birth to the term. Fifteen divided by three is five years: the first luck pillar begins at age five.

If the count does not divide evenly, convert the remainder. Seventeen days gives five years and two days left over; two days is eight months, so the pillar begins at five years and eight months.

What a luck pillar actually does

A luck pillar does not change the natal chart. It activates it. Elements already present are brought forward; elements absent can only be supplied during the decade the pillar governs.

When a luck pillar combines, clashes, punishes or harms a natal character, that period usually carries the corresponding event — a move, a change of work, a shift in a relationship. Most of those land where the structure is being touched.

A pillar carrying a favorable element makes the decade ease; one carrying an unfavorable element tightens everything, and the same undertaking meets noticeably more resistance.

How luck pillars and annual pillars divide the work

Three layers, three scales. Mixing them is what makes a reading vague.

LayerScaleGoverns
Natal chart (four pillars)A lifetimeStructure, tendency, ceiling
Luck pillarTen yearsTheme of the phase, external conditions
Annual pillarOne yearSpecific triggers, timing of events

An example: weather and day

Take a weak day master that favours Water and Wood and avoids Metal and Earth.

A Water decade supplies what is missing: a window for accumulating and expanding. A Metal decade raises external pressure, and the same undertaking meets more resistance.

If a Water year falls inside the Metal decade, that single year brings relief — but it does not change the tone of the ten years around it.

That is the relationship between weather and day. A year can swim against the current; it rarely reverses it. When judging a specific event, always ask which decade it sits in before asking which year.

Questions

Eight luck pillars or ten?

Classically eight, covering eighty years. Modern software often prints ten, out to a hundred. Beyond eighty the conventions diverge and the value declines, so there is no need to insist on either.

Why does one person start at three and another at eight?

Because the distance from birth to the nearest solar term differs. Three days convert to one year, so the further the birth sits from a term, the later the pillars begin. This shifts only the starting coordinate, not the quality of the chart.

Is the year of a pillar change especially turbulent?

There is a traditional notion of "handing over" the pillar. In practice, a year or two either side of a change often does bring environmental shifts — moving, changing jobs, a relationship changing shape — but how much depends on how the old and new pillars meet the natal chart. Not everyone has a dramatic year.

Which matters more, luck pillar or annual pillar?

It is not either-or. The luck pillar sets the baseline; the annual pillar sets the point. Without the decade as background you cannot judge the year; without the year as trigger the decade is only a vague trend.
